December and Christmas recap

Wow- what happened?! I had all these great Dec. post ideas and then poof, the holidays are over!
So, here is what have been up to. We decorated, went to the Kennedy Center for a Christmas music spectacular, went to a couple of Christmas parties (my theme was Christmas pins, much to Ethan's chagrin),

shopped, shipped presents out, sent cards out,

went to Tennessee and back for Christmas. Drank too much, ate too much, and slept too much. It was the best!

There you have it- 3 weeks in one post :)
Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and is pumped for 2014.

My Hippie Life

The other day at work, a co-worker and I were discussing the definitions of "hippie", "crunchy", "granola", and "tree-hugger". Whenever there is a confusing question, we turn to the most reliable source, urban dictionary.
I thought I was crunchy, but we determined that I'm granola. Here are some things I do you may not know about me which is how I came to be granola.

  • I love animals (who doesn't). I look for all natural products that are not tested on animals (just say no to L'Oreal). I won't wear fur and it makes me cringe when I see someone wearing it (It's gross if you think about how they kill them and there are so many nice faux furs out there).  I think I do have a few pairs of shoes though that have leather though.
  • Because of the previous bullet, I am pretty much a vegetarian. When we do eat/ buy meat, I try to look for organic, grass-fed, free-range meats (only fish, chicken, and sometimes pork). I hate the idea of those farms cramming all those poor animals in pens, treated bad, etc. etc. My husband loves a good steak though when we go out-I don't begrudge him thatust because it's not for me.
  • I am concerned about the environment and try to do my part. Even when I was a little tyke watching Captain Planet, I created a recycle bag (yup, a paper bag) for my family to recycle. When we lived in Michigan and didn't have a single stream pick up recycling program like we do now, we sorted our recycling and took it to the recycling center (aka the dump). In our house now, just in case you're confused- we have 2 trash cans and one is clearly labeled for recyling. I am OCD and love my labelmaker too much.
  •  I love Dave Mathews Band and listen to "Dave Mathews Band" on Pandora all.day.long at work. (I don't think this is as bad as say Phish though).
  • I only wear natural deodorant. I recently switched to Tom's. I was seriously considering making my own (but lazied out). I hate patchouli though, don't worry.

  • Not to get too politically involved here, but I am against any kind of discrimination. I have friends of all walks of life and I only wish for them happiness and the same opportunities that I have.
So there you have it. I'm granola. Don't worry though, I'm not obnoxious about stuff- I keep my nose out of other people's biz and I just try to be the healthiest I can be. What about you are you granola or any of the like?
Enjoy the weekend!

Jan. Feb. March 2013- Review Extravaganza

I like to plan and the idea of recapping 2013 chunk by chunk definitely appealed to me, so for the next Thursdays, you'll be hearing about 2013. Thanks Kenzie!

Jan- we rang in the New Year in Cape Cod, MA. Set some goals. We actually did really well with the fiscally responsibility, until we bought a house. We just needed so much stuff that the budget was blown.
Feb- went on a road trip to Richmond to have the cat's dental work done. Typing that sentence made me cringe at how crazy I sound.
 Only 1 tooth.

Feb/ March- went to Bimini with the girls just like the RHOMIA. It was amazing and the highlight of the freezing winter- duh. Sigh, I might need to make going to paradise when it's freezing in DC an annual occurrence.

March- went home to TN to help with the family garage sale and clean out my crap I've been storing in my old childhood bedroom. (I sorted it and my poor parents are still anxiously awaiting me to take the boxes).
Tune in next week to relive April, May, and June with me.

Humpday Confessions

Whoo hoo, my girl Kathy is doing a link up, so you know I have to participate for my favorite canuck!

Dateless in Dallas

1. Here's what pics on my phone look like. I love my little chubba. The poor fit cat doesn't get nearly as much love. And I might be a crazy cat lady.

2. I never wear shoes at my desk. This is a slight issue when my boss calls me into her office and I have to scramble to put my heels on.

3. We made up new words for the Sound of Music, just in time for Carrie Underwood's remake.
"I am 36, going on 37, I play video games...." This is for Ethan of course. I am still in my 20s and need someone older.

4. We've had to make phone calls recently to: my medical insurance, doctor's office, college financial aid, and the cable company. I don't even know who I loathe more.

5. I secretly love Vanderpump Rules. I might even like it better then the RHOBH. I'm far too old for these twenty year olds delicious drama.

Halls Decked

The day after Thanksgiving, I began to decorate. (Who am I kidding, I started decorating after the dished were done on Thanksgiving).  Fa La La La La! It's taking my all strength to wait to get more Christmas decorations until the after Christmas sales!
My little bro from PA visited us on Saturday and I made him take pictures of E and I for our Christmas card. Christmas card done.
I've been lighting it up online getting gifts. Almost done.
Outta my way- it's Christmas season fools!

Autumn Book Challenge Update

Happy Cyber Monday All. I am trying to stay out of the online shops today as to avoid being a greedy little piggy and buying a bunch of "gifts" for myself!

So, the holidays are upon us which means some added stress! To unwind, there's nothing I like to do more than snuggle under the warmth of a blanket and read a good book (I'm also having a hankering for some hot chocolate with a candy cane in it now). What's on the nightstand to read now is on my list form  Megan's Autumn Reading Challenge.

10: Read a book that has been featured in Oprah's Book Club.
The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
I am so pissed- this book was awful. I got to 350 or so pages before I had to stop. Now, it's messed up my points! Grrrr.

30: Read two books by the same author.
The Tao of Martha and Jeneration X by Jen Lancaster
Done. I love me some Jen Lancaster, but I preferred Jeneration X faaar more than Tao of Martha. I don't really get into her "project for a year" format. Thus, I didn't care for My Fair Lazy and Such a Pretty Fat, or The Happiness Project for that matter.

Oct- 30 points
Nov- only 30 more points for a total of 60. Darn you Johnathan Franzen and your pretentious writing!
I might be a big loser regarding the points, but this challenge helped me put together a nice list of books to read!
