Frankenstorm Follow-up

Frankenstorm (aka Sandy) has brought 2 days out of work and partial power and I have turned into a slovenly hog.
We have no heat, so I am wearing multiple layers of sweats. (This also means no hot water = no hot shower = think about it)
The finest in sexy lounge wear ;)

There's nothing to do but eat, so that's what I've been doing... I'm saying that I NEED to save the freezer food, like all the popsicles.
My saving grace is that the TV worked in out living room, so I made the couch my fallout shelter. In between watching movies all day, I took cat pictures and annoyed E.

I am so thankful that Sandy has just been boring for us. I am definitely thinking of my peeps in NYC & NJ and hope they get back to normal soon!

Spooktacular Halloween Treat!

For our Saturday night Halloween party, I decided to make bloody eyeballs (made with peanut butter and chocolate of course).
Disclaimer, they took a while, but are super tasty and cute!

Step one, mix 1 c. melted butter and 4 c. melted peanut butter (I used chunky) and 6 c. Rice Krispies and 5 c. powdered sugar.
"Heaven isn't too far away.... whoaaaa...." Warrent

Step 2: Mix together and roll into balls. (This requires a sous chef for sure)

Step 3: Chill balls (15 min) & melt lots of white chocolate (chips or bakers bars). Do not be a cheapskate and try to add water to the melted chocolate to thin it out. It will separate & ruin the chocolate & you'll have to go to the grocery store again :)

my ghetto homemade "double boiler"

Step 4- 6: Roll balls in melted chocolate. Add a Reese's pieces on the center for the pupil while the chocolate is still warm. Chill again for 15 min.
Use red food coloring and toothpick for the veins.

Yum, they taste like a Reese's Cup! The only thing I noticed is they need to be chilled or eaten off a toothpick, if they start to warm up (i.e. sitting out at a party for an few hrs), the food coloring will get on people's hands!

Costume Disaster

As Frankenstorm approaches, I spent my weekend preparing for a Halloween party of course.
Water, flashlights, pshhaw.
My costume was going to be Joan from Mad Men.
I have the figure, and some of my work clothes would have worked. I just needed the red wig. Easier said than done!
I couldn't find a "Joan" wig, but I did find a long, red wig. I mean how hard can it be to style a wig right?

Red wig before:

Hair Cut:

UGH- HORROR!

Anyways, a last minute decision was made and I copied E and went as a lumberjack with him.

I made the eyeballs and those turned out to be a success! More to come on that treat.

Kimmy Doppelgangers

I read on article on yahoo about a Pippa look-alike that was making big bucks as a Pippa poser at parties/ and events in the UK. (Sorry, I couldn't find it again to link to)
This got me thinking, I get a LOT of "you look like...." , I need to cash in on this. I couldn't find the article and I have no idea how to get a look-alike agent, so maybe I'll just parlay it into a rockin' Halloween costume.

Doppelganger #1: Liv Tyler
My cool costumer idea: her character in Lord of the Rings
Sidebar: I also think this is where I can make $ as a Lord of the Rings impersonator head fairy. Surely there are some rich nerds obsessed with Lord of the Rings ;)

Doppelganger #2: The T-Mobile girl
Someone at my office thinks I look just like her. The costume would be easy, just a pink dress, but I don't think anyone would get it.

Doppelganger #3: Anne Hathaway
I don't think I look like her, but I could be a nerdy princess a' la Princess Diaries for Halloween.
Money to be made on this look a like- zilch.

I actually already have a costume already, but it's a secret. Let's just say say today involved cutting, super gluing, and styling a red wig ;) More to come on THAT!

Halloween Treats!

Who's excited for Halloween?! Lots of scary movies & Halloween specials on TV are getting me in the mood.
I started looking online for some fun party treats.

Kitty Litter Cake

Seriously, it's chocolate, but I think I won't be invited to anymore parties if I bring this!

Peanut Butter Eyeballs

I had these at a party before & they are delish.

Or what about a red velvet cake in a brain mold!

Now I have to plan my Halloween costume & I'm all set :)

Eye Makeup

I found an interesting article about different types of eye makeup.

I THOUGHT I had many different eye makeup looks (that are work appropriate) & thought this would be a great blog post. However, the pics are not only horrifying, but look almost all the same! Either way, enjoy my scary eye pics as a pre-Halloween treat :)

My Retro/ Sexy Look
Black liquid liner on uppers only with purple eyeshadow:

After the gym, oops, is a little smear-y.

My Brown Smoke Look
Brown kohl on uppers & lowers with brown shadow:

Uhhhh, doesn't look smoky at all, perhaps need to re-name.

My Au Natural (AKA Weekend Bum) Look
Mascara only:

My lashes look the longest here...

This Means (Netflix) War!!!

E and I share a Netflix account. Technically, he started it, but we "share" now. Until today.

You might recall a post I did where I was sooooo excited to watch some 80's chick flix. Well, they have not yet arrived, but several terrible looking horror movies have arrived.

I was talking to a co-worker about the movies he watched this weekend. He and his wife in fact watched the first season of Mad Men. Anyway, he didn't like it as much as Dexter, Sopranos, etc. I have been waiting forever for the latest season of Dexter.
Turns out, we are not 1, but 2 seasons behind. Horrors!
Plus, I have been talking about seeing the Wire since last year.

I made some adjustments to our Netflix account that suited me better:
We'll see, I might need my own account ;)  Does any other married couple do this? We have 2 TVs...

Because there's nothing I like to do more than sit on the couch and watch movies on the weekend!

This was awesome (for a while), when we were snowed in & I had all day and night to watch movies and eat brownies.

Weekend Shopping

Last weekend, I winterized my closet, so you know what that means. Shopping! I don't have enough to get me through this fall/ winter season. #firstworldproblems

Here were some of my (deep) thoughts as I shopped today:

1. W(ho)TF does NY & Co. think they are? A lot of their stuff looks really cheap, but every top is $50, which I think is expensive, when you can get a really nice quality top (or dress) for that at TJMaxx!

2. I know they are fashionable, but I cannot wear skinny jeans. At all. Too Much Booty in the Pants at Old Navy when attempting to try on their "rockstar skinny cords" P. S. I hate Old Navy & this was the first time I've been in one in like 4 years. It's be another 4 years before I go back.

3. Sales are awesome. Every store has one very weekend (Loft).
4. Eating huge brunch with the hubs before trying on clothes is not awesome.

I die- this is just the bread basket. I heart beignets!

5. Do these come in adult sizes? Do want!

I got a couple of cute pieces today, so hopefully, I'll be pulling it together more at work!

Dumpster Diver

Did anyone catch Extreme Cheapskates on TLC?!
This lady dumpster dives for all her food.
I like to save money and get free samples or CVS freebies, and I will admit, I picked up a few items on the sidewalk in NYC ;)

Mine & E's NYC apt. (at Christmastime, duh). I think the leaning lamp was a sidewalk special.

This was our bedroom, nothing free that I could spot, but did I really like fake plants/ flowers this much?! Poor E, I'm surprised we got married really.

Anyway, I draw the line at dumpster food though.
The woman on the show said she was spending $25/ week on food (in NYC?).
WTF?
When I lived on my own, I sure wasn't close to $25/ week for groceries. E and I currently spend almost (deep breath) $200/ week for groceries between all our stores (Whole Foods, Giant, Wal-Mart).
I love the grocery store & we love healthy, organic (read: expensive) food.
Is that normal for 2 people and 2 cats? (Yes, our food budget is out of control because of the cats $0.50 food).

Zumba Scandal!

I am fortunate that I belong to a cheap gym that's right across the street from where I work. Although it's cheap, I still want the classes to be good (they don't have anything cool like Barre or Soul Cycle, but whatever).
I used to LOVE Zumba on Wednesdays.
Until the scandal.
The instructor that I loved quit (she got another job) and then began the auditions for a new instructor. Every week it was someone new with a new routine, so they had to stop & show steps, etc.
The head class instructor (who happens to be a gay male) would watch and evaluate these auditions for a new Zumba instructor.
There were some OK instructors that came through & then last person to try out was a gay male, who used to take the class.
Guess what?! He got the position & he wasn't the best. I am accusing him of sleeping his way to the top. There is definitely some monkey biz going on.

Last week, he threw the towel halfway in the class because "he was on vacation and didn't work out for a week and was tired".

Maybe I am inventing some drama because I wished my life had more scandal and intrigue to it. Speaking of, who's going to catch My Life is a Lifetime Movie premiering tonight?!

E sent me this, talk about a real Zumba scandal:

Thank Goodness for Work

Today I was fortunate enough to telecommute, but wow, I am much better in an office.
Let's start with how I look at home. I wore pjs all day, until I was forced to go out. I didn't bother with makeup
Plus all I wanted to do was snack on all the goodies in our apt!

I thought I might be a good full-time telecommuter, but I might be too lazy for that :/

Mom, My Tummy Hurts!

Last night was our Anniversary dinner. Very nice, but I was more concerned with my personal favorite- dessert, so E took me to a 2nd location for dessert, Serendipity. This is a big debate between us- to eat dessert at the restaurant where we have dinner or to go to a different place- I like to go somewhere else to extend the evening.
Anyhoo, Serendipity started in NYC and now they have a location in Georgetown, which is a NIGHTMARE to get to on a Saturday night & it was filled with teenagers.
I had a carrot cake sundae. Which was huge (3 scoops of ice cream, wish a piece of carrot cake, whipped cream, and cherry on top). And no, I did not share.
E says he can see the lust in my eyes in this pic. Just reading their dessert menu brought a smile to my face.

I think I always try to eat so healthy, that when I splurge, I really go all out! This morning my tummy was still hurting.
E is making a delicious, healthy butternut squash soup for dinner tonight, but I'll be dreaming of this for many nights to come:

5 Years

Today is mine and E's 5th wedding anniversary.
I left a cheesebomb message on Facebook this morning and already gave his presents to him yesterday (because I can't keep a surprise).

This is one of my favorite photos from our wedding day:

People sometimes ask me what advice I have for them (as newlyweds or engaged, etc.). (Which isn't a lot since 5 years isn't that much, they need to ask my parents with 36 years!)
Here's my one tidbit, especially for women- ask/ tell your spouse what you want. Sometimes I get upset about something little & think he knows, but later I would find out that he really had no idea! Or sometimes I want him to sit next to me and me lovey dovey because I had a bad day, so now, I ask.

Today was a beautiful, sunny fall day, just like our wedding day. We did normal Saturday stuff and are going for a fun dinner tonight at Ceiba followed by dessert in Georgetown at Serendipity 3.

Old Friends Friday

Yay, I got to see 2 of my bridesmaids on my day off! We had a yummy (long) lunch at founding Farmers.

Today (photo shamelessly stolen off Facebook)

Good thing I got see some old friends and catch up, so I didn't have to face the pumpkin spice latte shortage!
Happy Friday xoxo

Southern Ladies

This morning, three sweet, older ladies boarded the Metro and I immediately thought, they are from the South. How did I know? They were all matched perfectly head to toe in pastels, full makeup, and their hair was done (big).

My mom grew up in CA, but is now a Southern lady (see, pearls all the time).

Pastels all the time. The ladies on the Metro were worse with pastel, plaid capris.
P.S. this was Savannah, GA, one of my fav Southern places.

One sat next to me and  her friends were in front of and behind us. When they spoke, their accents gave them away. I of course spoke to them.
I told them the river we were crossing was the Potomac, asked where they were from (Louisiana), and wished them a fun trip. They said everyone was so nice and helpful here (ha- it must have been their first day and I was the only DC person they met).

Anyway, before I starting chatting, I was reading a great book about the South (Texas)- Roses. So here are some of my recommendations for gettin' a lil' South in your life without buying pastel plaid capris.

Books:
Roses by Leila Meacham - Texas plantation, love, drama, war, very Gone with the Wind.
Anything by Mary Kay Andrews. I just finished Summer Rental, which was excellent, but my favorite has to be Savannah Blues (probably because it takes place in Savannah which I love).
The Help by Kathryn Stockett - there's the movie too ;)

Movies:
Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil (or the book, but I haven't read it)
Lifetime's remake of Steel Magnolias or the classic Steel Magnolias
Another classic- Fried Green Tomatoes

Recipes:
I wish I was a better Southern food cook, but it's too un-healthy for me to make it really delicious.
My all time fav- Red velvet cake.
Fried okra or try a light fried okra recipe.
Great for a party! Serve like a dip with crackers: bacon pimiento cheese

I die!
What are your favorite Southern things?

WTF Mr. Squirrel?!

Our beautiful fall porch decor is being attacked and eaten by squirrels!
And our obese cats do nothing but watch. Time to get a BB gun.

Just kidding, E sent me this yesterday and I died laughing. I love squirrels, although I think I might want to toast those pumpkin seeds and eat them myself this year.
I also realized we have to put poor Gus on a more serious diet/ exercise regime.

Bug Fighting

Meh- everyone at the office is getting sick! I am now in anti-illness protection mode.
  1. I am wearing out the hand sanitizer at work and avoiding the "sickies". I only wish it wasn't so uncool to wear the SARS mask.
  2. I have eaten 2 oranges today and am planning on an apple too.
  3. Must buy Echniachea at CVS and immediately take.
  4. Pondering currently if it's better to go to the gym or skip it to rest?
What do you do to fight off the "bugs"?!

Federal Holidaze

Today is Columbus Day, so I don't have work!
Today WOULD have been a great day to get a lot of productive tasks done. Well, it was raining and cold, so I decided it wasn't a good day to venture out to far.
I did take a yoga class, but then watched movies for the rest of the day. I will say Avengers and The Five Year Engagement were both really good.
I didn't even eat, I just popped figs in my mouth like a little monkey all day.

Monkey Chow remains

Pumpkin Obsessed?

9am- Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks

10am- Trader Joe's to stock up on:

I went in for the tea, after trying my co-worker's, I had to have it for myself. Then I found the pumpkin Greek yogurt. Both are amazing & I would highly recommend them if you're a pumpkin freak and live by a Trader Joe's.

11am- Ann Taylor Loft for orange (pumpkin colored?) pants.

Not sure yet if I'm keeping these, they might be too tight and bright! :O

My favorite pumpkin recipe is Paula Deen's pumpkin gooey butter cakes. If those pants above were snug (but will stretch out) when I tried them on, this cake would put it over the edge! This is a perfect dessert to bring for a fall-time party. (That's my stand-by though, so don't bring it to a party I'm going too!)

So, as much as I love pumpkin, I lamented to E, I've never actually eaten a real pumpkin. Adding that to my bucket list. Oh, today we also added, go to Germany for Oktoberfest.

What I'm Loving Friday- Fall Edition

Yea, I've never done an 'What I'm Loving" post, but I'm doing it now & I love a theme.

It's apple season! I really want to go apple pickin' and make eat lots of apple butter. (E is getting more and more excited about the weekend I am planning).
Honeycrisps are my favs. Oh yea, I have an awesome red stapler a la Office Space.

Candy Corn. I know I totally called myself out on my white trash tastes, but I can't help it, especially those little pumpkins!

Oh and they're on sale- booya!

Beautiful fall weather to go for a nice run in. Ethan gets me these sports t-shirts that I work out in & then dudes ask me about my "team" and I have to admit I know nothing about sports.

Today's conversation:
Guard at our building: you gonna watch the game?
Kim says What?
Guard: Yea, I just got the game on a podcast here.
Kim: Whaaaaa?
Guard: Points to my t-shirt (Cardinals).
Kim: Oh yea, my husband gets these for me, I'm not really into sports.
Guard: Did you even know they were playing tonight?
Kim: um, have a great weekend!

Any Good Movies?

OMG- is there anything available on Redbox? Please help me!
I watched Bucky Larson the other night because I was so desperate. I mean look at these ratings:

So, I hacked into E's Netflix account to put some good stuff in the queue (not foreign horror movies). (Sidebar, we're married, it's not hacking, more like what's your is mine :))
Once again our Netflix account is confused! Recommendations based on your interest in Romantic Comedies and Gory Horror Movies....

Anyway, I am very excited about Lifetime's Steel Magnolias http://www.mylifetime.com/movies/steel-magnolias (it's this Sunday gays & girls!)
While discussing Steel Magnolias (new and old), 9 to 5, Fried Green Tomatoes, and other classics, I got one old school recommendation that I hadn't seen- Big Business! 'm very excited- I added this along with the original Steel Magnolias to our Netflix!  Who's exited for a 3 day weekend watching these great movies? (not Ethan!)

The not so Jolly Green Giant

I always get asked how tall I am, usually when I'm wearing heels by either a very short man or a fairly tall man. I am 5'10" and am over 6" with heels & let's face it, the best heels are at least 4". Seriously, one guy said "Wow" then asked me how tall I was. So annoying- in my mind I hear right out of Deuce Bigalow "Wow, that a huge bitc*"

I digress- c'mon men, nothing says "I'm insecure" more than asking a (tall) woman how tall she is, so you can measure yourself. What do you think, is it insecurity or curiosity? Is it a rude question, like "are you pregnant" or am I the insecure one?!

Anyway, I googled "Jolly Green Giant" and Halloween costumes came up... I think I have my costume for this year...

A Good Home Mani

We had a fundraiser event to attend this weekend. Normally, I would get a mani/pedi for such an occasion, BUT I have turned over a new leaf. I DIY'ed, and let me tell you, I can't tell much of a difference (except in my wallet- booyah!)
First, you do need to invest in the proper tools of the trade:

Cuticle pusher backer & softener, cuticle trimmer, file, nail buffer, good base coat (I love OPI nail envy), a good nail polish (I prefer OPI or Essie, which CVS now sells), and then a good top coat.

Money saving P.S. Our CVS sells OPI & Essie now, sign up online & you'll get 20% coupons all the time.

If you've ever had a mani, just follow what they do & allow enough time to dry.
Final product:
Essie "still spinning"
Sorry for the man hands pic.
